It will invest £450m in its engine manufacturing centre, doubling its size to 200,000 sq ft (18,581 sq m).

The plant, on the i54 business site in south Staffordshire, employs 700 people, a number it expects to double.

A rise in global demand had led to the centre’s expansion, the company said.

Mike Wright, executive director of Jaguar Land Rover, said the plant was “absolutely pivotal” to the company’s plans for global expansion.

“As we grow our volumes around the world we need more capacity,” he said.

“We’ve started the initial phase just 12 months ago, that’s gone really well, and we’re now planning for the next phase for the next two or three years.”

Mike WrightImage captionMike Wright, executive director at Jaguar Land Rover, hopes the expansion of the company’s engine manufacturing centre in Wolverhampton will help it keep up with global demandBusiness Secretary Sajid Javid said the company’s further investment was “further evidence that the British automotive sector can compete with the best in the world”.

“More than 10,000 jobs have been created and about £3.5bn has been invested in its Midlands’ manufacturing sites since 2010.”

Jaguar Land Rover first announced plans to build the engine manufacturing centre at the i54 business park in 2011, spending £500m on the site by the time it had opened.

It supports three other manufacturing sites in the UK, based at Castle Bromwich and Solihull in the West Midlands and Halewood on Merseyside.

The firm currently makes about 400,000 engines every year, with one coming off the production line every 40 seconds.

Jaguar Land Rover will create 1,300 new jobs to build Jaguar’s first sports utility vehicle (SUV) at its Solihull plant in the West Midlands, the company has announced.

The firm has already invested £1.5bn in the Solihull plant to enable it to increase production, and it said its workforce there had almost doubled over the past three years to 9,450.

Jaguar Land Rover currently employs 30,500 people in the UK.

Peter Plisner reports.

Around 1,300 new jobs are on their way to the West Midlands in a huge New Year boost for UK industry – thanks to a new Jaguar sports car.

The vehicle, described as a practical five-seat vehicle, is to be built at the Land Rover factory at Solihull, for launch in 2016.

The new sports car was announced as the Midlands biggest manufacturer revealed global turnover up by nine per cent in 2014, with 462,678 vehicles sold. Land Rover celebrated a record year with 381,108 vehicles sold while Jaguar sales were 81,570.

The new sports car, which will go on sale next year, will follow this year’s launch of the Jaguar XE sports saloon, also produced at Lode Lane, which has seen several thousand new jobs created in recent years.

The XE will create 1,700 in-house jobs at Solihull, 700 more at parts supplier DHL and well over 2,000 in the supply chain.

The plans for the new Jaguar were announced at the Detroit Auto Show, one of the world’s biggest annual motoring events.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said: “Today’s announcements once again demonstrate our commitment to the UK and the advancement of a high-tech, high skilled, manufacturing-led economy.

“Jaguar Land Rover is committed to delivering more great products. It is that innovation and relentless quest for new technologies that sets our products apart.

“We want to offer customers greater choice, with even more exciting vehicles, crafted with that special British flair.”

To support the introduction of its new aluminium and lightweight technologies Jaguar Land Rover has already invested £1.5 billion.

The new facilities represent the largest single investment in the Solihull plant in its 70-year history, creating a ‘factory within a factory.’

The Lode Lane facility incorporates Europe’s largest aluminium body shop and final assembly hall, collectively the size of 22 football pitches.

Applications for the new jobs created by the Jaguar crossover vehicle are now being accepted.

The Queen has today offcially opened Jaguar Land Rover’s new £500 million engine manufacturing facility in Wolverhampton

You know it’s not your run-of-the-mill factory opening when Her Royal Highness turns up to cut the ribbon. And that’s exactly what happened today at Jaguar Land Rover’s new high-tech £500 million engine building facility.

The new plant, which is the size of 14 football pitches, is JLR’s largest investment for in-house engine design and manufacturing in a generation. It will be home to the new ‘Ingenium’ range of engines, that will underpin the upcoming generation of both Jaguar and Land Rover products, starting with the new XE saloon.

The first engine that will roll off the state-of-the-art production line will be the all-new 2.0-litre diesel, featuring in the XE from launch and eventually finding its way into cars such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport, amongst others.

JLR is extremely proud of this Ingenium diesel as, when fitted to the XE in 161bhp form, it beats the equivalent BMW 3 Series for both performance and efficiency, with a claimed 75mpg and 99g/km of CO2.

The JLR Engine Manufacturing Centre, located in Wolverhampton and adjacent to the M54, has created a total of 6,900 jobs in theUK, including many in the supply chain. £150 million was also spent on advanced assembly robots and laser drilling, to ensure exacting standards.

A total of 245 engine parts will be put together by a 1,500-strong team of JLR employees, to complete the finished powerplants.

The first XEs will roll of the production line with these engines in next year, for deliveries in May 2015.

Queen to open Jaguar Land Rover engine factory

The Queen will today officially open the new £500 million Jaguar Land Rover engine factory in the region.

The Queen is to open the £500m landmark developmentThe Queen is to open the £500m landmark development

Her Majesty will be accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh for the visit to the factory, off the M54.

It is the crowning glory after the region secured the engine plant against fierce competition both at home and from abroad.

The visit to the i54 business park takes this morning. Managers were today telling staff the good news.

After cutting the ribbon at the JLR Engine Manufacturing Centre, the Queen and the Duke will attend a lunch at the plant.

It will be the Queen’s first visit to the area since her Diamond Jubilee two years ago, when 30,000 people flocked to RAF Cosford.

JLR has long links with the monarchy. Both Jaguar and Land Rover have held Royal Warrants since 1951 and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are known to favour JLR’s Range Rovers and Defenders.

The company first announced it would be building its engine plant at the business park, just outside Wolverhampton, in 2011 and work began on the site the following year.

Gavin Williamson, Conservative MP for south Staffordshire, said the investment in the JLR site was vital “not just to south Staffordshire, Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands but to the country as well”.

He added: “This represents high quality British manufacturing, exported all over the world, following half a billion pounds’ worth of investment and hundreds of new jobs.”

JLR was tempted to the i54 site after a concerted charm offensive mounted by local councils, supported by the UK government.

Business secretary Vince Cable, during a recent visit to the Midlands, said he considered bringing the company to the region was one of the biggest single achievements of his five-year term in office.

The 775,000 sq ft factory, the size of eight football pitches, will eventually provide work for 1,600 people.

A hall for the manufacture of engine components and an assembly hall to put together new Ingenium diesel engines are complete.

They are gearing up for full-scale production early next year, tied in to production of the new Jaguar XE saloon. Meanwhile, work on a 250,000 sq ft petrol engine assembly hall is also under way.
